A garage door that shakes, jerks or wobbles while opening is usually trying to tell you something. It may still go up and down, so it’s tempting to leave it alone for a while. But that movement isn’t something to ignore, especially if it is getting worse.
There are a few possible causes, and they aren’t all equally serious.
Start With the Door Itself
Sometimes the problem is simply that the door isn’t moving evenly along its tracks.
Bent tracks, loose hardware, worn rollers or an obstruction can make the door hesitate as it moves. You might notice a particular spot where the shaking gets worse, or hear a scraping or rattling sound at the same time.
Cold weather can make these problems a bit more noticeable too. In a place like Newmarket, changing temperatures can affect metal parts, lubrication and how freely the system moves.
The Rollers May Be Worn
Garage door rollers sit inside the tracks and help the door travel up and down.
When they’re worn, damaged or simply getting old, the door may start to vibrate rather than glide. You may also hear a rougher sound from the track area.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the whole garage door needs replacing. Sometimes a smaller component is causing a surprisingly annoying problem.
Springs and Cables Matter Too
Garage doors are heavy, which is why the spring system does a lot of the lifting work.
A worn or damaged spring can affect the way the door moves and stays balanced. Cables can also become loose, damaged or uneven. If the door seems to lift more easily on one side, or the shaking is accompanied by unusual spring or cable movement, it’s better to have it checked professionally.
Spring systems are under high tension, so this isn’t really a good DIY project.
What About the Opener?
The shaking doesn’t always start with the door.
A garage door opener that is struggling with a heavy or poorly balanced door can also make the movement look uneven. The opener may be working harder than it should, especially if the door has developed another mechanical problem.
That’s why a proper inspection usually looks at the whole system rather than blaming the opener straight away.
Is It Still Safe to Use?
That depends on what is causing the movement.
A little noise from an older door isn’t automatically an emergency. But if the shaking is becoming violent, the door is dropping, hanging unevenly, making loud metal-on-metal sounds or refusing to open smoothly, stop using it until it can be checked.
BWI Garage Doors provides repair and maintenance services for springs, cables, tracks, rollers and garage door openers, along with residential and commercial garage door work.
For Garage Door repair in Newmarket, the useful first step is finding out why the door is shaking instead of replacing parts at random. A technician can inspect the tracks, hardware, balance and opener together and work out what actually needs attention.
A shaky garage door may be caused by something fairly small. It’s still worth getting to the bottom of it before a small issue turns into a stuck door on a very inconvenient morning.
