You press the button. The garage door groans. It shudders a little bit. It goes up, but it sounds like it is in pain.
Most homeowners ignore this. You probably think, “Well, as long as it opens, it’s fine.”
It is not fine.
If your door is struggling, your balance is off. And if you ignore it, you are going to destroy your automatic opener. If you are looking for garage door repair in Aspen Hill, you want to catch this issue now before it becomes a double-replacement bill.

Here is how to check it, and why it matters.
The Opener Is Not a Crane
This is the biggest myth in our industry. People think the electric opener lifts the door. It doesn’t.
The springs lift the door. The opener just guides it up and down.
Think of it like power steering in a car. The springs do the heavy lifting (literally). If the springs are weak or the tension is wrong, the door becomes “dead weight.” Suddenly, your poor little electric motor is trying to deadlift 200lbs of steel.
It wasn’t built for that. It will burn out.
The 2-Minute “Balance Test”
You don’t need special tools to check this. You just need your hands.
1. Close the door completely. Do this from inside the garage.
2. Pull the red rope. This is the emergency release cord hanging from the rail. It disconnects the motor.
3. Lift the door by hand. It should feel surprisingly light. A balanced door only weighs about 10-15 lbs to the touch.
4. The Drop Test: Lift the door until it is halfway open (about waist height) and carefully let go.
What happened?
• If it stays put (or drifts slightly): Your balance is perfect.
• If it slams to the floor: Your springs are weak or broken.
• If it shoots up to the ceiling: Your springs are wound too tight.
The “Hum of Death”
If your door failed that test, your opener is currently dying a slow death.
Inside most LiftMaster or Genie openers, there are plastic gears. When the door is unbalanced, the motor grinds those plastic teeth against the heavy metal chain. Eventually, they strip.
You will wake up one morning, press the button, and hear a loud “HUMMMMMing” noise, but the door won’t move an inch.
That is the sound of a stripped gear. Now, instead of just a simple spring adjustment, you need a whole new opener unit.
Don’t DIY the Springs
If the balance is off, you might be tempted to grab a wrench and tighten the springs yourself.
Please don’t.
Torsion springs are under massive tension. One slip can break a hand or worse. It is the most dangerous part of the house.
At BWI Garage Doors, we handle this specific problem every day. We can re-tension your existing springs or replace worn-out ones safely. We check the cables, the drums, and the tracks to make sure the door floats like a feather.
